Doreen Dobyns, RN, CDE, with the GRH Regional Medical Clinic, 506 Fourth Street,
La Grande, has achieved Certified Diabetes Educator status. The National Certification Board for Diabetes Educators (NCBDE) announced that Dobyns had achieved the Certified Diabetes Educator® (CDE®) status in November by successfully completing the Certification Examination for Diabetes Educators. Candidates must meet rigorous eligibility requirements just to be able to take the examination.
Dobyns has been pursuing this certification for approximately a year, with more than 1,000 hours of teach that had to be completed before she could sit for the certification exam. Doreen is available to consult with RMC patients upon a referral from their primary care provider. Achieving certification status demonstrates that the health care professional possesses distinct and specialized knowledge, thereby promoting quality of care for people with diabetes. Currently, there are approximately 18,400 diabetes educators who hold NCBDE certification.
NCBDE was established in 1986 to develop and administer a certification program for health care professionals who teach individuals with diabetes how to manage their disease. The mission of the organization is to define, develop, maintain and protect the certification and credentialing process to promote quality diabetes education. Through the program, NCBDE recognizes and advances the specialty practice of diabetes education. NCBDE supports the concept of voluntary, periodic certification for all diabetes educators who meet credential and experience eligibility requirements.
